The Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea is the most technically extreme watch Rolex has ever put into series production. Introduced in 2008 as ref. 116660, it was built around a single engineering objective: survive 3,900 meters of water pressure - nearly four kilometers beneath the ocean surface, where the force exerted on the watch case is equivalent to approximately three tons. To achieve that rating, Rolex developed the Ringlock System, a proprietary case architecture incorporating a nitrogen-compressed inner ring, a grade 5 titanium caseback, and a 5.5mm domed sapphire crystal - the thickest ever used on a production Rolex. Nothing else in the Rolex catalog is built like this, and nothing else in series production at any price point matches its depth rating.

The D-Blue dial - and the "James Cameron" nickname that came with it - arrived in 2014 to commemorate filmmaker and deep-sea explorer James Cameron's historic March 2012 solo descent to Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point in the ocean at approximately 10,908 meters. Cameron made the dive wearing a Rolex Deepsea prototype on the exterior of his submersible. The D-Blue dial translates that journey into color: deep ocean blue at 12 o'clock fading to absolute black at 6, with vivid green "DEEPSEA" text that echoes the color of Cameron's submersible. The Chromalight markers glow blue in darkness. It is one of the most narratively complete dial designs Rolex has ever produced - every detail connects back to the story it tells.

The reference 126660 is the second generation of the Deepsea, introduced in 2018 with Rolex's upgraded Calibre 3235 and a wider, more comfortable bracelet. It has since been discontinued and replaced by the 136660 - making this 2022 example one of the final production pieces of this reference. For collectors who value the 126660's full Glidelock and Fliplock clasp system and the Calibre 3235's 70-hour power reserve, a clean, fully documented late-production example like this one is increasingly difficult to source.
